Ecotourism in India
Ecotourism, Responsible travel, Sustainable tourism
Ecotourism in India has been around for some time now. There are quite few people and companies that do genuine work in the fields of ecotourism in India but unfortunately there are also those who have realized the short term economical potential of green washing.
The green washers hide their true identity under a false ecotourism mask. They pretend to practice ecotourism and sustainability however, they neither care about the environment nor the society. Their only intention is to earn a quick buck. The good thing about green washers is that it is quite easy (in most cases) to identify them. But the worst thing about green washers is that they destroy the credibility and the potential of ecotourism as they create scepticism. Therefore the first lesson for every one interested in ecotourism is to investigate, read and ask questions before buying ecotourism products.
On a more serious side there are those people and companies who practice genuine ecotourism. These are people who have also realized the economical potential of ecotourism but they do it in the right way. These people or companies have the right intentions and know that by doing it right every one can benefit. These are people or organization who practice
doing well by doing good.
Even though practices of ecotourism is good for every destination through out the world, yet for some destinations it has a more urgent or immediate application. These are related to the social and environmental situation of the country as well as the period of time that those countries have been exposed to mass tourism. India is one of those countries that can benefit from practices of ecotourism and fortunately many have understood the urgency and need of these practices.
Among all the states in India, Kerala has been one of the pioneers of ecotourism in India. Kerala is among one of the most successful states in India to promoting tourism to this state. They have also been one of the first states to realize the potential of ecotourism and have been promoting ecotourism for some years now.
Today promotion of ecotourism has spread to many other states as well and ecotourism is not only promoted by the state tourism, but also widely practised by very many individual small and medium tourism and hospitality companies through out the country.
Among one of the unique initiatives in the field of ecotourism is the web portal
Travel to Care that concentrates on promoting and show casing genuine travel providers that practice ecotourism In India and a number of neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri lanka as well.
